Maguire to be charged with assault
Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire is expected to be charged with aggravated assault after he was arrested following an altercation on the Greek island of Mykonos.
Maguire spent Thursday night in police custody amid accusations he was involved in a brawl with other holidaymakers, with some reports even alleging that Maguire hit a police officer during the incident.
The United captain is understood to be cooperating with police during their investigation, and The Guardian note that Maguire is expected to be hit with the charge on the neighbouring island of Syros in the near future.
“The soccer player was verbally abusive to an officer and then hit him. The three were resisting when brought to the Mykonos police station,” a police official said when asked to summarise the incident.
Police spokesperson Petros Vassilakis added: “There were several policemen there. At some point, one of the three members of the group – they were aged 27, 28, and 29 – threw a swing at one of the policemen and a fight ensued.
"All of the three were arrested but during the effort to do so, the other two, including the football player, got violent also. They threw down at least two policemen, hit them with their fists and kicked them.
United have declined to comment on the incident other than to simply acknowledge it, but if Maguire is charged by police, his status as team captain will likely come into question.
